Created by graduate students for high school students

Taking science outside of the classroom by inviting students into a laboratory

We want to highlight the opportunity for students of all backgrounds to become a researcher and break down barriers and myths that currently prevent young students from populations historically underrepresented in the sciences from pursuing science.

We encourage students to explore new research fields to develop their awareness of the incredible science that is all around them

Our Mission and Focus

Inspire young students to cultivate their interest in science

Allow students to experience first-hand what a scientist does on a daily basis

Create an accessible program for all students, regardless of socio-economic status

Improve communication between scientists and the community

Highlight the exciting diversity of science fields

Benefits of Shadow A Scientist

We modeled Shadow A Scientist after a successful outreach program at the University of Texas at Austin. An article published in PLoS One demonstrates the benefits of Shadow A Scientist to students and researchers alike!

Here are a few of the program outcomes:

  • Boost student’s enthusiasm for science

  • Increase student’s knowledge of science and STEM careers

  • Raise scientist’s interest in outreach

  • Improve scientist’s communication skills
